3 Cool Facts about Solar Power

The sun is a powerful energy resource.

The Earth receives a lot of solar power. According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a total of 173,000 terawatts (trillions of watts) of solar energy hit the Earth continuously. This amount is 10,000 times more power than the planet’s total energy use!

There is so much potential in solar power!

Here are 3 cool facts about solar power that you can share with friends:

1. Solar is the most environment-friendly power resource.

It is free and readily available to everyone.

A report by the Department of Energy (DOE) says that with every 1.5 kilowatt of installed solar capacity, we can prevent as much as 1,576 kilograms of emissions or an equivalent to planting 256 square meters of forests!

2. The Philippines is No. 1 in use of solar photovoltaic systems for electric generation among developing countries in Asia.

In 2018, consultancy firm Solarplaza recognized seven active solar projects in the Philippines. According to them, progress in the energy sector shows the country’s capability in operating big solar projects.

3. At SM, we have 10 solar powered malls – 7 in the Philippines and 3 in China!

Solar panels convert solar energy to electrical energy through solar cells.

In the Philippines, we have 7 SM malls with solar panels. These are SM Mall of Asia, SM City Cauayan, SM City Cabanatuan, SM City Iloilo, SM City Trece Martires, SM Tuguegarao, and SM Seaside Cebu!
