Why is it so hot lately?
You may be feeling the temperature getting hotter every afternoon.
Even with an electric fan turned on next to you, you can’t seem to shrug off the sweltering heat.
You start to wonder if it has always been this way.
Yes, it’s hot during summer.
But not this hot.
Across the globe, hot days are getting hotter and more frequent.
Why is this happening?
Scientists are observing changes in climate across the world. A landmark report released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says that the Earth is getting warmer — with each of the past four decades warmer than every decade before it.
What does this mean for us?
The IPCC explains that we can expect the coming years to bring more extreme weather events — even worse than what we experience today.
In the Philippines, we only have hot and dry season.
Imagine our summers getting hotter and rainy seasons longer and stronger!
Because our country is among the most vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change, a warming world means stronger typhoons, sea level rise, extreme rainfall, and rising temperatures for the Philippines.
What can we do about this?
According to the IPCC, global temperatures are set to rise beyond the target limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius unless there are massive and immediate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
What our climate future will look like really depends on what we do now.
That is why SM signed up as a supporter of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). TCFD provides globally recognized recommendations that help companies better understand climate-related disclosures, realize risks and opportunities, and meet global climate targets.
With the TCFD recommendations, SM commits to protect our vulnerable country and be a part of the solution to climate change.
