Most of the refrigerants that we are using today is known to have a negative effect in our environment. On a daily basis we are using Air conditioning units and Refrigerators especially in a tropical country like the Philippines. These equipment produces and emits carbon dioxide which is the main gas responsible for Global Warming (Greenhouse effect) that contributes to the ozone layer depletion. It is highly recommended that manufacturer should reduce and stop production of harmful gases following the Montreal Protocol and give priorities on improving the energy efficiency of their refrigeration systems and the use of refrigerants with low global warming potential (GWP). Overall, we can reduce these harmful effects by going Green, plant more trees as trees grow, they help absorb and sink the carbon that would otherwise contribute to global heating, the more trees are out there, the better.

Regular preventive maintenance of the aircon equipment aids in minimizing harmful effects of refrigerant by prompt identification and rectification of leak points to lessen the emission. Opt to choose aircon with less damaging type of refrigerant such as R-410A. Natural ventilation and air circulation of residential / commercial spaces will be a more sustainable alternative for aircon / refrigerant usage.

My simple way to minimize the harmful effect of refrigerants is basically by doing preventive maintenance regularly. However, better suggestion is to less the usage of these refrigerants and may use natural ventilation instead. In this way, we will also be able to lessen the effect on global warming/climate change. We live in Philippines, so better accept that we are in a tropical country.

On top of the regular maintenance that really helps not only in prolonging the lifespan of our air conditioning unit but also in allowing us to gauge leakage and damages that can cause harm to our appliance, much more to our environment. We can reduce this potential harm by tempering our a/c usage and savoring natural ventilation by opening our windows from time to time. The effects of climate change is really taking a toll and I believe it is our responsibility to help even through small ways, one of which is to reduce our carbon footprint.

The AC works get the air into the ducts in the vent. This air is used to cool the gas in the evaporator, then the heat is removed from the air then it cooled. It continue to the ducts to blow air back into the room, until the air inside the room reaches the desired temperature. The AC are moving the unwanted heat to blow outside the room. That uses massive amount of electricity and can leak potent greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide is also released into the air that is called green house gas, in which that contribute to ozone depletion. Once the ozone depletes there will be a thinning of the Earth’s ozone layer in upper atmosphere caused by the released of chemical compound. In which is the ozone layer protects the Earth against the UVB coming from the sun that causes to increase the heat temperature now a days.

Regular preventive maintenance of air-condition, particularly by tracing if there’s any refrigerant leak and using Refrigerant recovery machine when replacing the compressor or reprocessing of the system to minimize the release of refrigerant in the atmosphere. Also, the manufacturer should stop producing harmful gases.
